A true product of the 1950s, Kevin Derrow grew up during an era that shaped his values, resilience, and appreciation for life’s many journeys. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School through eighth grade before graduating from Garrett High School, where he became known not only for his determination in the classroom but also for his athletic achievements. Although he finished solidly in the middle of his graduating class, he earned the senior athletic award, was named All-Conference First Team in football, and set a school record in track.

Awarded a journalism and athletic scholarship to a small Indiana college, he soon realized his path was leading elsewhere. After a semester and winter session, he made the life-changing decision to enlist in the United States Navy. Over a distinguished 14-year career, he served aboard two destroyers, one battleship, and an island-based assignment, experiencing adventures that took him across many of the world’s oceans and seas. Beginning as an E-1 Seaman Recruit, he ultimately advanced to O-2E Lieutenant Junior Grade.

Using the Vietnam Era GI Bill, he continued his education at Indiana University and Old Dominion University, earning degrees in General Studies and Political Science.

After leaving the Navy, he embraced a wide range of careers and experiences, working as a lawn technician, railroad conductor, substitute teacher and coach, front man and musician, one-man-band performer, and professional truck driver behind the wheel of big rigs. He also served for several years in an Indiana National Guard Army unit, though he remains a lifelong supporter of the Navy during the annual Army-Navy rivalry.

Throughout his journey, he became a son, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His writing reflects a lifetime of experiences—blending memories, adventures, and imagination into stories shaped by seventy years of navigating both heavy seas and calm waters. His collection is a reflection of a life fully lived, filled with challenges, triumphs, humor, and the lessons discovered along the way.
